Tackling disease and health system challenges

The work of the Commonwealth in the area of health address issues that concern some of the biggest disease and health system challenges on the global health agenda; prevalence rates of maternal and infant mortality and morbidity remain very high in many Commonwealth Sub-Saharan African countries and some Commonwealth countries in Asia and South Pacific; HIV prevalence among women continues to grow and the stigma surrounding AIDS limits the implementation of effective interventions; due to lifestyle and dietary changes, countries in the Caribbean and Pacific are seeing rapidly increasing morbidity and mortality associated with diabetes, hypertension and cancer; the increasing global demand for health workers has resulted in their migration to seek opportunities abroad, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa.

The objective is to strengthen the delivery of health care in Commonwealth countries by supporting the development and implementation of national and regional policies and strategies.
